Cade is 4 Months | Atlanta Family Photographer

I love shooting outdoors using natural light, but I also can’t resist a good in-home session. For Cade’s four month milestone session, we opted for just this, as we’d previously done his big sister’s four month session at the family’s home. Children always seem a bit more at ease when we shoot in their home, because it’s familiar and the place they’re most comfortable with. Plus, when needed, mom or dad can easily grab the ipad to entertain a sibling for a bit. 😉 I so enjoyed spending the morning with this sweet family of four (plus their pup!). You can’t beat a happy, smiley baby and a darling big sister all cozied up in the crib together. Enjoy these in-home milestone favorites!

Why do professional photographers charge what they do?

Why do professional photographers charge what they do?

It’s a question that I’d venture to guess all clients ask themselves when searching for the right photographer for their family’s needs. There are so many facets that make up a photographer’s business, most of which likely go unnoticed by the client because they are things that aren’t as tangible as their photographs. But these facets are all important and contribute to your photographer being able to provide the service and art that captures those beautiful, priceless photographs of your loved ones.

Starting with the basics… what goes into creating the final product?

For a one hour Family Photo Session with Melissa Hayes Photography, this can include:

– pre-session emails, scheduling, drawing up contract (1 hour)
– travel to and from the session (approx 1 hour)
– session time (1 hour)
– loading images onto computer and culling to select the best images to edit (1 hour)
– editing images in Lightroom and Photoshop, which includes cropping, adjusting exposure, color correction, sharpening, small corrections to skin for acne/red marks/slobber and clothing for spots, etc. (3-4 hours)
– setting up client’s online viewing gallery and loading final images in both print resolution and web resolution (1 hour)
– post-session follow-ups (30 minutes)
– backing up files to multiple external drives (client files are saved for one year) (30 minutes)
– blogging client’s session, creating social media sneak peek posts, etc. (1 hour)
– *sending print orders to the lab, designing and ordering heirloom albums, packaging and mailing or delivering albums to clients (these are an additional charge and are not included in the total hours listed below)

So what seems like one hour’s worth of work is easily more like 10-12 hours for that session. For newborn sessions, several hours can be added to that total for longer shooting and editing time. In addition, the photographer needs to account for taxes and a boatload of expenses that come along with running a photography business.

What kind of expenses?
– Camera equipment | Full frame cameras cost thousands of dollars, as can lenses. In addition to that, there are SD cards, lens filters, camera bags, tripods, lighting gear, off-camera flash, backdrops… the list goes on. These are some of the most fun things for a photographer to invest in, but they also come with a hefty price tag.
– Computer with a large hard drive and fast processor
– Multiple external hard drives to back up your priceless images
– Website
– Editing software
– File sharing software and online viewing gallery subscription
– Business insurance
– LLC licensing fees
– Education | Professional association memberships, training, workshops, conferences, etc.
– Mileage to and from sessions; gas; parking fees
– Props (especially for newborn photographers)
– Marketing and promotions
– Client gifts
– Lab printing costs (prints, albums, and canvases for samples and client orders)
– Shipping/postage for client orders and gifts
– Taxes (25-30% for MHP)
– Accountant

Ok… but dollars and cents aside, what do you get out of it?
This is by far the most important factor. With a professional photographer, you’re getting experience and an artistic vision that will hopefully capture your family as you want to remember them at that time, whether it’s a newborn baby, toddler squishiness, or your quickly growing teenagers. I can’t speak for every photographer out there, but my hope is that my clients will walk away from their experience with me feeling thrilled with what I have given them. My goal is to capture the love and laughter and personalities that make up each one of my client families. When clients tell me that they had tears in their eyes viewing their images, that they can’t bare to choose just a handful of favorites, that they can’t wait to share them with family and friends… those are the things that make my photographer heart sing and know that what I’m doing is important. Being a parent myself, I now truly understand the saying that the days are long, but the years are all too short. Time passes too quickly when you’re watching your children grow, and I am honored to have the opportunity to capture those precious faces and memories for my clients.

I hope this gives some insight to clients, whether they are researching photographers for their first-ever professional portrait session or are just curious as to why photographers charge what they do for their work. Portrait photography is more than just pictures… in my opinion, it’s the most personal of art forms. It has the ability to preserve a moment in time that will never happen exactly that way again. It serves as a historian for families, communities, and cultures. It can stir up emotions of all kinds and is quite literally worth a thousand words.

M Extended Family Fall Session – Buckhead | Atlanta Family Photographer

I’m pretttty sure that these guys are all just hired models and not actually related, but I guess that’s neither here nor there… 🙂 We met up late last fall for an afternoon session amid tons of orange and yellow leaves, which made for the prettiest backdrop. The last time I’d photographed the M family was when baby Beau was born in early January, so needless to say, a lot had changed since then. I love seeing my client families periodically throughout the year, especially when they have babies who are changing so much every few months. This is the last session I have to post from 2017, so enjoy! And be on the lookout for 2018 fun to come!

M Family Fall Session – Dunwoody | Atlanta Family Photographer

Have you ever seen a cuter little doll than Miss Lucy? I have been photographing her family since way before she was a part of this family, and I just love them more and more every time I have the pleasure of seeing them. I cannot get over those blonde curls and big, beautiful eyes… and she is just as sweet as she is adorable. It’s such a great thing when your clients are the kind of people you would love to have as friends and would totally hang out with on a random Saturday night. The M family are those kind of people, and I’m so happy we got to know each other years ago. Enjoy a peek at some of my favorites from their fall session at Dunwoody Nature Center.

Tips for preparing your home for your newborn session | Atlanta Newborn Photographer

So you have a baby on the way (yay!) and have booked a photographer for newborn portraits…. how do you prepare for your session once baby is here? I sometimes get questions or concerns from parents about not having the perfect nursery, or their house is a mess, or they don’t have much space for newborn portraits… but I’m here to assure you that I’ve worked with a variety of spaces and lighting situations, and I can always find a spot to work with. My goal is to capture this special, awe-inspiring time in your lives — so while the backdrop is a component of your photos, it’s certainly not the focus. I’ve compiled my top tips for parents to help make your in-home newborn session as easy and seamless as possible.

  1. Before the session, walk around your house to determine which rooms have the best natural lighting during the day. Sunlight provides a beautiful, natural-looking light for photographs. So turn off the overhead lights and lamps (I know you think that’s crazy, but I promise it’s the way to go!) and open up those blinds and curtains. When I arrive, I’ll do a walk-through to find a couple spots that work best for lighting. Even if it’s just a hallway or a guest bedroom, we can set up shop and you’ll never know the difference in your final images. I do have a special love for shooting in the nursery to capture some shots of baby in his or her own space, even if it’s just using the crib or glider for some solo shots. If you don’t have a lot of natural light streaming into your home, don’t worry — I can bring along some extra lights in case they’re needed.
  2. How should you dress your family? For parents and siblings, there’s no need to match — coordinating colors/patterns are best for photos. Neutral colors are great because they are pleasing to the eye and don’t compete with the focus of the photos, which is your family! The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and look like yourself. If you can have the baby in just a diaper (swaddled up is fine), then we can easily start photos without having to disturb them by removing clothing. I also love a baby in a plain white or light-colored onesie, so having one on-hand is great.
  3. I will provide a few neutral-colored blankets for backdrops, various colored wraps/swaddle blankets, headbands, hats, and a large basket for photos. You are more than welcome to provide anything else you like — a family quilt, a special stuffed animal or outfit, swaddle blankets, headbands, etc. I also have a white noise app that I can play from my phone, but if you have a noise machine or soft music, we can play that to keep the baby calm.
  4. An hour prior to the session start time, turn your thermostat up to about 85 degrees. It’ll be quite toasty for the adults, but baby will love it and be nice and cozy, especially when partially or fully unclothed.
  5. Plan to feed your baby just before the session starts in order to help induce sleep. A full baby is a happy, sleepy baby. It’s also a good idea to have an extra bottle on hand or be prepared to nurse in case they get hungry mid-way through.
  6. It may be easier said than done, but try to relax and just enjoy your session celebrating the newest member of your family! You’re here to soak in the newborn smell, the baby snuggles, and the love that created this new life. I’m here to take care of the details and create beautiful images for you to cherish forever.
